Short
Fiction
One of the most difficult things a new writer
must learn is how to use a minimum

One exercise that I have found useful is to write

"What's your name, Son?'
"I've many names, Father."
"Don't you want to die with a clear conscience?"
"I can't."
"God forgives."
"Not me."
"Did you murder her?"
"And many others."
"Others?"
"I won't die. It's my punishment."
"Punishment?"
"Your God is vengeful."
"He's yours too."
"No. He passed sentence long ago.
You asked my name. In California, it was Zodiac."
"Zodiac? That was years ago."
"In London, I was Jack."
"The Ripper? That's over 100 years."
"Before that...so many. I'm doomed
because of my real name."
"Real name?"
"It's so long ago, I almost forget.
"What...what was it?"
"Cain."
The Treat
58 words
By S. Joan Popek
"Why'd you buy a garbage disposal?
You eat everything in sight."
"For you, Dear. I know you like things
neat."
"Bring me another beer." He threw
an empty can at her.
She got him a beer--and herself a meat
cleaver.
She fed the parts that didn't fit in the
disposal to the dog.
The dog enjoyed the treat.
